Raven Symone Release A Statement Regarding Her “Not Being An African American” Comment

This past weekend Raven Symone aka Olivia (from the Cosby show) ruffle some feathers during her interview on her on O’s “Where Are They Now” show with Oprah.

The 28 year old actress finally opened up and discussed the rumors regarding her sexuality.

She confirmed that she is currenlty in a relationship with former America’s Next Top Model contestant AzMarie Livingston. And although she’s in a relationship with a woman Rayven made it clear to Oprah that she does not consider herself to be “gay” or “bisexual”.

I’m in an amazing relationship with my partner a woman and on the other side, my mother, and people in my family have taught me to keep my personal life to myself as much as possible so I try my best to hold the fence where I can. But I am proud to be who I am and what I am.

The part of the interview that set twitter on fire and got people talking is when Raven stated that she don’t consider herself to be African American.

I knew when I was 12. I was looking at everything (boys and girls). I don’t need language, I don’t need a categorized statement for it. I don’t want to be labeled ‘gay.’ I am a human who is human. I’m tired of being labelled. I’m an American! I’m not an African-American. I’m an American.

After the negative backlash and being dragged through the mud on twitter regarding her “not being an African American” comments Raven released an official statement to try and clear up the controversy.

Check out what she had to say below:

“I never said I wasn’t black … I want to make that very clear. I said, I am not African-American. I never expected my personal beliefs and comments to spark such emotion in people. I think it is only positive when we can openly discuss race and being labeled in America.”
